Brides, are you starting to look for your wedding dress?

Brides, this one’s for you!

Before you step into a bridal boutique, you need clarity to limit having to make as fewer decisions as possible..

Here are the questions I recommend every bride asks, along with the honest answers you actually need…

What is the realistic total budget I should have for my dress?

Your dress is not just the ticket price, unfortunately.

You need to factor in:

  • Alterations. Often £200–£600+

  • Veil and accessories

  • Undergarments and shoes

  • Cleaning and pressing

Realistically, add 20–40% on top of the dress price.

2. What do brides actually spend, not just the starting price?

Ignore “starting from £999”. That’s not helpful.

Most brides spend in the £1,500–£3,000 range, depending on boutique and designer. High-end boutiques go beyond that quickly.

3. How far in advance should I start shopping?

Start 12–18 months before your wedding.

Why:

  • Dresses are made to order

  • You need time for multiple fittings

  • Rushing limits your choice and increases stress

If you’re under 9 months, you need to be looking at sample sales or off-the-peg dresses.

4. What are the lead times, and what if it’s late?

Typical lead time is 4–8 months, plus alterations.

Ask:

  • What is the guaranteed latest delivery date?

  • What is the backup plan if it’s delayed?

5. How do I avoid overwhelm?

Keep it simple ladies:

  • Visit no more than 2–3 boutiques

  • Try no more than 6–8 dresses per appointment

  • Limit the amount of guests you bring with you to your appointments

  • Know your budget before you walk in

7. Does bridal sizing differ from high street sizing?

Yes. Significantly.

Most brides go 1–2 sizes up from their usual size. Ignore the number please!

8. What level of alterations is normal?

Sorry to say that almost every dress needs alterations.

Common adjustments:

  • Hem length

  • Taking in or out at the bodice

  • Strap adjustments

9. What customisations are realistic?

You can usually:

  • Add sleeves or straps

  • Change necklines slightly

  • Add sparkle or detail

11. How should I store and transport my dress?

  • Keep it in a breathable garment bag, your dress boutique will provide one for you

  • Store it somewhere cool and dry

  • Avoid plastic long-term storage

When transporting:

  • Hang it properly or lay it flat in a clean space

  • Never squash it into a car

13. How should I prepare for my first appointment?

Come prepared, not overwhelmed.

  • Wear nude underwear

  • Bring shoes of a similar height that you would like to wear on your wedding day if you can

  • Have inspiration, but stay open-minded

14. Who should I bring, and who should I avoid?

Bring 2–3 trusted people MAXIMUM.

Choose:

  • People who understand your style

  • People who are supportive, not opinion-heavy

15. What are the biggest regrets brides have?

The patterns are always the same:

  • Choosing a dress to please others

  • Going over budget and feeling stressed

  • Rushing the decision

  • Or the opposite. Over-shopping and getting confused

Final advice from me…

Your dress is important, but it is one part of your wedding.

You should feel confident, comfortable, and like yourself. Not overwhelmed, pressured, or unsure.

Trust your instinct. When it’s right, you will know, promise!

Happy shopping!

With love and support,
Yasmin
