Why Skipping Canapés Is One of the Biggest Wedding Mistakes You Can Make

Thinking of skipping the canapés? Please Don’t!

It might feel like an easy place to cut costs or simplify your day.

But in reality, this is one of the decisions that directly impacts your guest experience more than you realise.

Picture this…

Your guests arrive at the ceremony venue around 30 minutes early. They’re catching up, chatting, settling in. The ceremony itself lasts about an hour. Afterwards, there’s confetti, hugs, and photos, let’s go with at least another 15 minutes. Then it’s a slow transition to cars, followed by a 20-minute (perhaps longer)drive to your venue.

By the time guests arrive at the venue, it’s been a good few hours without food.

During the drinks reception, you’re off having your couple photos and checking your reception space is as perfect as you’d imagined.

(Completely as it should be may I add.)

Moving on, guests have got a drink in hand, which helps. But now they’re facing another 45 minutes of more or less, waiting waiting around.

Then speeches begin, which can easily add another 30 minutes before food is even served.

Then… finally… food.

Let’s pause there and look at this properly…

The Full Timeline

8:30 am - Breakfast for the bridal party.

9:30 am -Hair and makeup begins. The morning is busy, exciting, and full-on.

11:00 am - Last drink for the bridal party. After this, no more drinks to avoid disrupting hair and makeup. At this point, the bridal party won’t eat again until much later.

12:30 pm - Guests begin arriving at the church. They’re socialising, standing, waiting.

1:00 pm - Ceremony starts.

2:00 pm - Ceremony finishes.

2:00 – 2:20 pm - Confetti, congratulations, hugs, group gathering outside.

2:20 – 2:40 pm - Guests make their way to cars and begin travelling to the venue.

3:00 pm - Guests arrive at the venue. Drinks reception begins.

At this point:

• Guests havent eaten for atleast 2.5 hours

• The bridal party hasn’t eaten since 8:30 am

3:00 – 4:30 pm - Drinks reception. Couple is having photos. Guests are standing, drinking, waiting.

4:30 pm - Guests are called to be seated.

4:45 pm - Speeches begin.

5:30 pm - Wedding breakfast is finally served.

What That Actually Means…

From your guest’s perspective:

They arrived at 12:30 pm and they don’t eat until 5:30 pm. That’s a 5-hour gap.

From your perspective:

You ate at 8:30 am. You don’t eat until 5:30 pm. That’s a 9-hour gap.

By this point, your guests aren’t just hungry.

They’re hangry. They’re restless. And they can’t concentrate on the speeches because the smell of the food is coming from the kitchen.

This is the moment where the atmosphere of your wedding can quietly dip.

And it’s completely avoidable.

Canapés aren’t just “nice to have”.

They are a strategic part of your timeline.

They bridge the gap between ceremony and meal. They keep energy up, guests engaged, and the overall experience feeling smooth and considered.

Well-fed guests are happy guests. And happy guests create the atmosphere you actually want on your wedding day.

If you’re planning a relaxed but structured wedding, this is exactly the kind of detail that matters. It’s not about adding more. It’s about making smarter decisions that support the flow of your day.
