Where couples go wrong when choosing their wedding photographer

When couples start planning their wedding, finding a photographer is high up on their priority list.

Finding a photographer feels important, lets face it, it’s a big investment - the photographs last a lifetime and will be looked at through generations to come.

But there’s something many couples don’t realise when they start searching.

Not every photographer can do every style!

And if you don’t take the time to understand the kind of photos you actually want, it’s very easy to feel disappointed when your images finally come back. (I say finally because truth bomb - sometimes you can be waiting between 6 and 12 weeks to receive them back!) Anyway, it’s not because the pictures are bad, but because they don’t match the style you had in your head.

Most couples choose a photographer because they like a few images they’ve seen online, someone has recommended them, or they liked the way the photographer was at their friends wedding or they simply fit within budget.

Of course, all of that makes sense. But what often gets missed is that you’re not just booking a person, you’re booking a style.

Every photographer has a natural way they shoot and edit.

Some lean towards soft, light, romantic images. Others create darker, more dramatic work. Some focus on capturing moments exactly as they happen, while others guide you more and create styled, polished shots.

Most photographers blend these approaches slightly, but they will always have a clear direction they lean in.

Do you want your day to be captured quietly, without much posing, so you can just enjoy it and forget the camera is there? Or do you like the idea of being guided, with a bit more structure and direction so everything looks polished and considered?

There’s no right or wrong here. It’s simply about what feels right for you as a couple.

Where couples come unstuck is when they haven’t thought this through, and their expectations don’t match the photographer’s natural style. You might be imagining light, bright, romantic images, but the photographer you’ve chosen edits in a darker, moodier way. Or you might want lots of natural, candid moments, but your photographer tends to pose and direct more than you expected.

That’s where disappointment creeps in.

The photos themselves are often beautiful, but they don’t feel like what you thought you were getting.

A simple way to avoid this is to create a clear photography wish list before you book.

Think about how you want your photos to feel, not just how they look.

Consider how much direction you want on the day, and what moments matter most to you.

Then take the time to look properly through full wedding galleries from your photographer, not just the highlights.

What you’re looking for is consistency. Does their work, across a full day, feel like what you want your own wedding to look like?

It’s also worth remembering that a photographer won’t change their style for one wedding. And they shouldn’t!!

You’re choosing them because of how they already work, not asking them to become something different.

I hope this has been helpful.

With love and support,
